Water Restoration: The Steps for Repairing Water Damage

Christian Southards

Water restoration services are critical if you’ve experienced any kind of serious water damage in your home or office. Below, we’ve compiled a quick guide on the water restoration process so you can be well prepared.

Is It Called Water Restoration or Water Damage Restoration?

Technically, companies that repair water damage are called water damage restoration services. However, there’s a lot of different names for these companies! You’ve probably run across terms like water damage repair, water extraction or water mitigation too.

Generally speaking, all of these phrases are right, though they may refer to different aspects of the entire water damage restoration process.

What Is the Water Restoration Process?

We’ll cover this in detail later (see below), but generally, the water restoration process begins with a quick inspection before the water is removed. Then the site will be cleaned and sanitized, thoroughly dried, and inspected once again to make sure everything’s in order.

Quick note: it’s important that the inspector the site has a proper water restoration certification, otherwise they could miss important details about the project.

Water Damage Restoration for Residences

Water damage restoration for a house requires, what else, residential water damage services. The size and layout of the home will determine the exact process.

Water Damage Restoration for Businesses

Water restoration techniques for businesses or offices aren’t that different from those used for residences. Generally, the only thing that’s dramatically different is the scale of the operation, especially for huge locations with multiple floors.

What Are the Steps for Water Damage Restoration?

A Quick Note Before We Explain Water Damage Restoration Steps

Wait!

One more thing: we should note that the steps below follow the typical process for water restoration. There are certainly exceptions and some jobs may look fairly different because of the circumstances of the water damage. Also, keep in mind that certain steps tend to occur at the same time.

1. Keep a Water Damage Restoration Company in Your Emergency Contacts

It’s a good idea to keep an emergency water extraction team in your phone contacts. Water damage can happen at any time—anything you can do to help the repair process is well worth it!

2. Order an Inspection or Water Damage Assessment

An inspection or water damage assessment should be ordered as soon as possible. An inspector will evaluate the damage, come up with a plan, and can usually give you a water restoration cost estimate.

3. The Company Will Start the Water Removal Process

Once the inspection is complete, your water damage restoration company can begin removing any remaining standing water as well as any water that’s saturated the floors, walls, and anything else at the site.

4. Damaged Materials Will Be Removed

As water is being drained or extracted, any damaged or wet goods, materials, or other belongings will likely need to be removed from the site. Salvageable belongings will of course be returned once it’s safe to do so.

5. Commercial-Grade Drying Equipment Is Used

Once any standing water has been drained, specialized drying equipment will be placed throughout the site. This commercial-grade gear is far more effective than anything that can be easily purchased through an ordinary retailer.

6. Sanitizing, Deodorizing, and General Cleaning Are Next

As restoration for water damage continues, the affected areas will be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized.

A lesser-known danger of water damage is that it also serves as a breeding ground for harmful bacteria and mold (the dangers of mold are no joke!). This is one of the reasons it’s exceedingly important to hire professionals for the cleanup!

7. The Team Will Monitor and Evaluate the Site for Further Damage

After the site has been dried and cleaned, the water mitigation team will make sure the chances for further water damage are low. This may also include providing recommendations for any repair or remodeling teams.

8. Any Remaining Repairs and Construction Will Begin

When the water restoration portion of the job is complete, any remaining repair or remodeling work can be done.
