Water Extraction vs. Water Mitigation: What’s the Difference?

Updated: Dec 10, 2021

If you’ve ever searched for water extraction, you may have also come across water mitigation services. So: is there a difference?

Technically, yes. However, it’s pretty common for water restoration companies to use both terms because the services are frequently performed together. That said, below we’ve fully explained the differences between water extraction vs. water mitigation!

What Is Water Extraction?

The short version: water extraction is the literal process of removing water from your home or property. This includes stopping the flow of water (if it hasn’t been done already), draining any standing water, and then removing non-visible water.

This last part might be a little less obvious, but “non-visible water” refers to the water that’s saturating your home (think carpets or flooring, furniture, belongings, and even the walls!).

Special Equipment Literally Extracts Water From Your Home

For water damage restoration for a house or office, special equipment is used. We won’t bore you with the details, but it basically involves using what’s sometimes called a “wet vacuum,” which does exactly what the name suggests!

Safety Hazards Will Also Be Removed

Anytime you hire someone to repair water damage, part of the job includes removing any potential sources of danger (i.e. shock hazards, contamination, and mold).

What Is Water Mitigation?

Now that we’ve covered water extraction, what is water mitigation?

More or less, mitigation services are intended to prevent more water damage. This can include a lot of different actions but mostly comes down to sanitization, removing damaged property (mostly furniture and other belongings), and dehumidifying the property.

Your Home or Property Will Be Completely Sanitized (to Prevent Mold)

Once you extract water, you have to sanitize the property too as this gets rid of harmful bacteria, mildew, and mold. If left untreated, an infestation would inevitably develop—and you would then need to hire mold remediation specialists too (what is mold remediation?).

The Property Will Also Be Dehumidified

Going back to the dangers of mold, it’s also important to dehumidify your property once the water has been extracted. Too much moisture in the air can cause all sorts of problems you definitely don’t want!

So: Water Extraction and Mitigation Are Used for Water Damage Restoration!

And now you know that emergency water extraction and mitigation are both necessary parts of the water damage restoration process!
