The Dangers of Mold: Are They Serious?

Lindsey DeSoto

Updated: Dec 10, 2021

We’re sure you’ve heard horror stories about the dangers of mold in a house.

Mold growth is very common in homes and offices, especially after flooding or water damage occurs (check out how to repair water damage, if you’re curious). It thrives in damp areas and creates pesky spores that can quickly spread throughout your entire house if not removed.

So: here, we’re discussing the dangers of mold and why you should take care of mold growth as soon as possible.

Is It Dangerous to Live in a House With Mold?

If there’s mold in your home—regardless of the type—it’s best to remove it and fix the root cause immediately (how fast does mold grow?).

To be clear: it’s never a good idea to live in a house with mold for any amount of time. When taken care of early, you are less likely to experience negative symptoms associated with mold exposure. This is especially true for older adults, young children, and those with pre-existing health conditions.

How Do You Know if Mold Is Making You Sick?

So, how do you know if it's mold or the common cold?

Mold exposure tends to affect everyone differently. But generally speaking, if you experience cold-like symptoms that do not go away over time, mold may be the culprit and you should consult a medical provider as quickly as possible.

Cold symptoms like sneezing can also be signs of mold exposure.

What Are the Symptoms of Mold Exposure?

According to the CDC, the most common symptoms of mold exposure are:

  • Stuffy nose

  • Wheezing

  • Watery eyes

  • Skin rash

Having asthma or another chronic lung disease may exacerbate these symptoms.

Exactly How Harmful Is Mold to Your Health?

Mold exposure over time can be very harmful to your health. In addition to the symptoms mentioned above, there may be long-term effects associated with black mold exposure.

Can Black Mold Kill You?

For most healthy individuals, no. Black mold won’t kill you.

However, the CDC also says certain groups, especially those with weakened immune systems, are at risk for potentially life-threatening mold infections.

Wait, Can Mold Ruin My Belongings Too?

You bet. Aside from the health hazards, mold can also damage your belongings and ruin the structural integrity of your home. Plus, it’s gross! You definitely don’t want mold all over your stuff, right?

What Can Be Done About Mold Infestations?

If your home or office has mold, don’t worry: mold remediation can safely remove harmful infestations.

What is mold remediation? Simple: it’s the process of removing and preventing the same mold infestation from returning in the near future. Oh, and here's a breakdown of mold remediation vs. mold removal if you're curious!
